Faith worked late Friday. It was six o’clock that evening by the time she locked the office. She was the last to leave except for the night watchman they’d hired several years earlier after a few undesirable incidents in the old neighborhood.When she walked outside, Mr. Porter was nowhere in sight. Instead, Noah’s car was parked next to hers and he stepped out of it.

“How did you know I work late?”

“Actually, I’ve been here a while and had to explain myself to your night watchman. I had some work I could do while I waited.”

Her heart missed a beat while at the same time, exasperation kindled. “Is this what you call a cooling off?” she asked as he approached her.

He smiled that inviting smile that tempted her to relax and flirt with him. “You don’t look as if you’ve worked all day and a long day at that. I thought perhaps I could talk you into dinner. You have to eat. I have a place that has food any true Cabrera should like—the best paella this side of the Atlantic.”

She had to smile as she shook her head. His engaging grin demolished the protest on the tip of her tongue.

“C’mon. You can fuss after you’ve tasted the paella,” he said, taking her arm and leading her to the passenger side of his black sports car.

“Noah, you are way too sure of yourself. What do you expect to accomplish by doing this?”

“I expect to enjoy dinner with you.” He closed her door, cutting off her reply and climbed in his side of the car.

“You’re just postponing our inevitable split.”

“Why borrow trouble? Worry about a feud when and if one occurs. In the meantime, I wanted to see you and hey! Here we are. Let’s enjoy the moment.”

She had to laugh again. “You’re just impossible. I’ll bet your teachers adored you. You probably had them all charmed even when you were a little kid.”

“I did get along with them,” he said, making her feel as if her day had just gone from black-and-white to color. “My teachers loved me and I was an adorable student.”

“Should I add egotistical to your qualities?”

He grinned and took her hand to kiss her knuckles. “This is much better. I’ve missed you.”

After a swift rush of pleasure she reminded herself to keep up her guard with him. Beneath all the attention and charisma and smiles was a ruthless businessman who had one goal. And it wasn’t dinner.

That reminder faded in a whirlwind evening and a delicious dinner. It was almost midnight when they left the restaurant. After getting her car, he followed her home and walked her to her door.

At her door, he held her hand. “I’ll come get you in the morning for breakfast.”

“Noah, no…it’s too much.”

“I want you, Faith. In my arms, in my bed again,” he whispered.

“That can’t happen this soon. I told you, I need time,” she said, squeezing his hand and starting to turn away.

He pulled her to him, his mouth covering hers and ending any protest instantly.
